Netflix Original: Before I Wake (2016)

When it comes to Netflix Originals it’s so easy for it to be a hit or miss. They produce a lot of films and tv-shows lately but much of it isn’t watchable or little bit interesting. I been having my eye on ‘Before I Wake’ for a while now and since it’s almost horror I thought I’d give it a try. The film reminded me a lot about the horror movie ‘Mama’ – where 2 children are found in the woods in a shack, been kept alive by a ghost called Mama and she protects them. ‘Before I Wake’ is a lot like that.

Jessie & Mark lost their child in an accident happened at home, he drowned in the bathtub. Trying to heal they decide to become foster parents to a little boy called Cody. This little boy is a special one. He’s kind, sweet and so polite. But there is something very dark about him. When he falls asleep his dreams come true. Regular dreams and nightmare a like. At first Jessie takes advantage of this because when Cody dreams, their son appears. So she wants to see him, drugs Cody so he sleeps but he doesn’t like sleeping. Bad things tend to happen when he does. A figure appears but he doesn’t tell anyone until Cody starts screaming in his sleep, Jessie and Mark run to him to see what’s wrong and that’s when they see it. What happens when he truly sleeps. So now they have to fight to keep him and for their lives, Jessie does some research to learn more about her foster son.

Like I said previously, a lot of the aspects of the film reminded me about the horror ‘Mama’. You will understand why if you see the film. It’s a Netflix Original so you’ll find it in that category on Netflix.

Who are the actors in this film and where do we know them from?

  • Kate Bosworth – Jessie (SuperMan Returns, Still Alice, 21, Blue Crush)
  • Thomas Jane – Mark (The Mist: Movie, Deep Blue Sea, Dreamcatcher, Face/Off)
  • Jacob Tremblay – Cody (The Book of Henry, The Smurfs 2, Room)
  • Annabeth Gish – Natalie (Grass Stains, Team Life, Scandal, The Sons of Anarchy)
  • Hunter Wenzel – Tate (Gilmore Girls: A Year in Life, South of Hell)

Who is the director and what is she/he known for?

The director of this movie is Mike Flanagan, born in Salem, Massachusetts. As a child he would relocate often as his father was a U.S Coast Guard, as a child he would shoot and edit his own shorts on VHS and that continued when he attended high school and was in drama department. He’s done a lot of films during his career and if you enjoy horror then you might have seen some of his work: Oculus, HUSH, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Cold Harbor and many more.

IT (2017) **REVIEW**

Back in 1990 they released a TV-mini-series about a killer clown who preys on children to eat them. Some got really scared of clowns due to it. IT is based on the book from the popular horror author Stephen King.

When I heard they where doing a reboot of IT and it would hit cinemas as a shorter version. I have to admit, I was a little skeptical but I ended up liking it, a lot. It had scary moments, they did a good job with th clown. Pennywise is a little graphic in this version, we get to see him take a bite and children with no arms. But the new version really does work. I don’t know why some people feel like complaining saying it’s 100% crap. It’s just more graphic than the one from 1990.

Bill, Ben, Beverly, Mike, Richie, Eddie &  Stanley are unlikely friends but they are the ‘Losers Club’ as they call themselves. A few bullied kids who stick together as friends against their abusers. 3 older kids who like to pick on younger ones – brave. One of the bullies have a really horrible father and when you see the scene of him giving his revenge to his father, you will almost cheer.

But the kids are being terrorized by a demon who can shapeshift into anything that people are scared of. Mainly children that goes missing and no one seems to be wanting to search for them, except the ‘Losers Club’. More investigating they do, more terrorized they get and one day, one of them goes missing and that’s when they decide to go after this ting, one of them, Bill, got a fair good reason to wanting go after it – he took his little brother. But can you kill this thing?

We see Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise, most wasn’t happy about it but give him a chance. He is absolutely amazing. Doesn’t surprise considering he comes from a family of actors – his dad and two older brothers. One is in Vikings and other was in True Blood. You also can see Bill in Hemlock Grove on Netflix.

Who are the actors in this film and where do we know them from?

  • Jaeden Lieberher – Bill Denbrough (Midnight Special, St Vincent, Aloha)
  • Jeremy Ray Taylor – Ben Hanscom  (Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, Ant-Man, 42)
  • Sophia Lillis – Beverly Marsh (The Garden, 37, A Midsummer Nights Dream)
  • Finn Wolfhard – Richie Tozier (Stranger Things, Sonora)
  • Chosen Jacobs – Mike Hanlon (Hawaii Five-O, Cops and Robbers, Remnants)
  • Jack Dylan Grazer – Eddie Kaspbrak (Tales of Halloween, Scales)
  • Wyatt Oleff – Stanley Uris (Guardians of the Galaxy, Once Upon a Time, </scorpion>)
  • Bill Skarsgård – Pennywise (Simple Simon, Atomic Blonde, Allegiant)
  • Nicholas Hamilton – Henry Bowers (Captain Fantastic, The Dark Tower, Strangerland)
  • Jake Sim – Belch Huggings (Raising Expectations, The Magic Hockey Skates, Arthur)
  • Logan Thompson – Victor Criss (Fear Thy Neighbor, Sports Lab)
  • Owen Teague – Patrick Hockstetter (Bloodline)

Who is the director and what is she/he known for?

Andy Muschietti directed the film, but I couldn’t find much information about him but he is known for films as IT (2017), Mama (2013) and IT Chapter two. But he got two coming his way as they have been announced. I am looking forward seeing more from this director.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017) **REVIEW**

There are several different films about King Arthur and how he became king. This is no different. We seen an adaption in latest ‘Transformers‘  where he had help from a drunk called Merlin and he got help from outer space robots.

In this adaption we see a dark ages adaption where magic exist. In the beginning we see a toddler Arthur being shipped away to be saved when Camelot is being under siege. Both his parents die when they are trying to save him. So, Arthur grows up in a whore houses thinking he was the son of a prostitute, as an adult he later ran the house he grew up in. No idea who he actually is. Until one day when he is being shipped back home. Arthur’s uncle is now the king and he want to find Arthur to later kill him so he can become the true king. Doesn’t actually go as planned for him.

We see Arthur’s journey to kinghood, he grows as a man and fighter. He gets Excalibur and that sword is showing him some powerful stuff, but he refuses to accept the sword and his heritage. Until he simply have to.

We see some very familiar faces in the film like Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy, Pasific Rim), Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamon, Gladiator), Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones, The Wire), Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes, Spy), Michael Persbrandt (Beck, The Hobbit). And that is just to name a few of them. The director of this film is none other than Guy Ritchie.

Actors: Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Aidan Gillen, Jude Law, Astrid Berges-Frisbey, Michael Persbrandt, Craig McGinlay, Tom Wu and many more.

War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) **REVIEW**

This is it people. This is the last one of this epic story about the hero ape we all know and love, Caesar. His final act to save the apes from a war that Koba started. This film felt a bitter-sweet just as when I went to see ‘Logan‘.

In the beginning we get to see a group of military men approaching a camp guarded by apes. Shortly after they start shooting but man loses and gets captured, but there is something we haven’t seen before – apes helping man. Turns out they are refugee apes who helped Koba.  So now they are helping man, thinking the humans will take care of them but in fact, they have been given ridiculous names and being ridiculed.

After an ambush that humans did at the apes secret hideout, Caesar’s two closest gets killed, he decides it’s time to flee but he will go elsewhere, to look for the man who killed the two apes. Caesar  turned into the one thing he swore he never become; Koba. Hate is flowing through him and he won’t let go.

What you will see in this film is something truly amazing. We never seen Caesar this determined of anything. We also get to see something different, something that will make you go ‘HUH’. I don’t want to say too much without ruining the film, but  the virus that killed the humans before have now  mutated and turning them different. Some say they can’t communicate but they can, by learning sign language.

If you are a massive fan of this series I’d say you should see this film. It gives a certain closer to the franchise.

Actors: Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn, Karin Konoval, Amiah Miller, Terry Notary, Ty Olsson, Toby Kebbell and many more.

The Circle (2017) **REVIEW**

We live in a era of where social media have a lot of power. Information can be spread like wild fire and we also find out what we all had for dinner. I heard about ‘The Circle’ book and got interested since it’s aspect is the power of social media but then Emma Watson & Tom Hanks was doing a film out of it.

‘The Circle’ is about Mae getting a job at a huge tech company called The Circle, she’s so excited. They provide her with a room to stay. It’s a massive place and basically got all you need within the walls, you never need to leave really. One day as she sits doing her job two people come up o her asking why she hasn’t set up her social media profile yet, it was part of her job to be on social media and talk to co-workers. But one day that backfires when she shares her friends lanterns and he is being called for deer killer. The lanterns are made out of horns but he gets the horns from others who hunt. It goes so far he need to live in woods to hide. Power of social media.

One day Mae agrees to do something I would never do. To always wear a camera to live record her everyday life for everyone to see. It becomes a huge success. But with that also comes pain. She’s starting to lose friends and family due to the fact she can’t talk to them without them feeling uneasy by the constant filming. After her friends death she feels that something is wrong with The Circle and is determined to find out what, for everyone to see and.. to film it all for all her viewers.

Yes, I would say it’s important to see this film and it’s available on Netflix. You see the real power of social media and how quick jump on the band wagon of filming EVERYTHING and put it out there for everyone to see. In the film they believe that information should be available for ALL, all sorts of information. But that, I don’t agree on. It can be dangerous to know absolutely everything. There are some things we should not know, knowing everything doesn’t always mean good.

Actors: Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, Ellar Coltrane, Glenne Headly, Bill Paxton, Karen Gillan, Nate Corddry, Mamoudou Athie, John Boyega and many more.

Trainspotting 2 (2017) **REVIEW**

In the first ‘Trainspotting’ film we see the life on a few drug addicts in the 90’s and how desperate one of them wanted out to live a normal life but each time, his old life comes knocking on his door and pull him back. Til he rips his friends off, steal money they earned doing a deal and fled to Amsterdam to get his life up on track. And he managed to do so.

‘Trainspotting 2’ takes place about 20 years, same gang, different scenarios or trying to. Renton comes back to Scotland to see his old friends. But he isn’t as welcomed as he might have thought. His friends want their money back but after a fist fight or two, Renton goes into business with Simon who runs a different business but they need money. So they apply for a small business start up grant to their idea running. Spud is trying to stay clean, he doesn’t see his son, his girlfriend left, no money or anything, he tries to kill himself. Renton walks in and saves him, telling him, he need a new outlet, like a new addiction. But someone tells Spud ‘Why don’t you start writing your words down?’ And he writes and writes. Now, one big problem is coming back for the guys – Begbie. He finds a way out of prison and hears Renton is back in  town. And we all know Begbie will be coming for him like never before. But the question here is, we all know the guys will get the money but.. will they actually get the money? Who will runs off with it?

‘Trainspotting 2’ is definitely a film everyone need to see but to see it don’t forget to see the first film if you haven’t seen it. Both films are incredibly good and original. Something you don’t see often. Get your popcorn ready and get ready for some quality original drama.

Actors: Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle, Steven Robertson, Ewan Brenner, Gordon Kennedy, Jonny Lee Miller and many more.

Patriots Day (2016) **REVIEW**

We all know the tragic events that happened in Boston, U.S in April 2013 during a marathon. I can never forget the images that was shown on the news and in news papers. I live in Europe, have been for all my life but seeing event and people who lost their lives, it can’t be described.

‘Patriots Day’ takes you behind the scenes of that day. We get to see the police investigation and get to know the officers and their resilience into finding these men. All it took and the injured along the way, there was no stopping the officers. The men doing the deed probably thought they where never going to be caught and kept being outside and driving around, shooting others and kidnapping others like it’s no big deal. It makes you think – what are people really capable of when twisted enough!?

What inspired me with ‘Patriots Day’ was anyone can come together when in need and nothing is impossible long as you work together as a team. In the end of the film we get to see the victims and in their words describe what was going through their mind.

Actors: Mark Wahlberg, Rhet Kidd, John Goodman, Christopher O’Shea, Rachel Brosnahan, Jake Picking and many more.
